In 2024, the community of Buller called on national politicians to address the crisis threatening their local health services and developed The Buller Declaration which states :
We urge the House of Representatives to act urgently to:
Fix this crisis for all New Zealanders.
Address the disparities for Māori and rural and low-income communities.
Allocate the resources needed to train, recruit and retain more nurses, midwives, doctors, specialists, healthcare assistants, and other health workers.
Meet its obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and protect Māori health, in consultation with iwi and hapu.
They have also developed a petition that builds on the Declaration and lets all New Zealanders join the demand for a better health system that delivers care for everyone, addresses current inequities and provides the health workforce we need.
The Declaration is not a KHAG initiative but the actions it calls for are aligned with our views. The petition can be signed at the Kāpiti Impact Hub in Tongariro Street, Paraparaumu and on 18 November 2025 there will be a hikoi to present the Declaration to Parliament. See their website www.patientvoice.nz for details.
