From 1 July this year, the New Zealand health system changed dramatically. The District Health
Boards were disestablished and two new entities Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand and Te Aka
Whai Ora - the Maori Health Authority, were established.
The new system divides New Zealand into “localities”, with nine prototypes being implemented at
present. Learnings from these prototypes will influence the developments for the rest of the
country. Horowhenua and Porirua are among the prototypes.
